Catching the first wave of Google Plus -API
Posted on Jul 7th with 14119 views and 18 CommentsAfter one week of using Google+, it seems that it will be a success. The launch went really well, there was a lot of buzz created around this new service and users’ feedback was positive.
As far as mobile is concerned, the Android app is on the Market and iOS version is under approval process from Apple. But, this should not be the end of mobile apps based on this platform. As soon as we see some definite sings that Google+ is here to stay we can expect a lot of apps trying to use this new re-socialization of web and offer new mobile experience to users. While waiting for the API, we’ll talk about what kind of apps are expected for this new platform.

There is a lot of room for apps
Many would agree that Circles are what makes Google Plus more sophisticated and useful than Facebook. First of all – your privacy is better protected. Then, you can share freely with your friends without jeopardizing your other roles (of a co-worker, business partner, etc.) or vice-versa.
But sharing is becoming more complex and we are certain that very soon there will be an influx of great apps with a mission to improve your experience at this social network, offer different graphical interfaces, or automate certain tasks. These are just a couple of ideas of what will come. A look at the cool social networking apps at Smashapp will give you more.
To play or not to play
However, we would not bet on the abundance of social games and time-wasters on the new platform. And many people will appreciate this change. After all, Facebook is here to stay and Google+ won’t kill it as many anticipated at first. So, if you are building apps, think more about communication (content, hangout activities) than games.

Cross-network
The two social networks will be different, but users will want to access content from both. This opens up possibilities for cross-platform games on one, and multiple-platform apps on the other side. You will want to be able to play some game with your friends on other social network. At the same time you wouldn’t want to need to access the two networks separately each time you want to check what’s going on in the mobile world.
With mobile internet usage soaring, mobile developers are expected to come up with creative solutions which will make improve experience of the many who will use both networks. A mobile app with interesting interface seems like the best solution. The only question is who will make it first.
API is coming soon
Finally, the API. It will give many possibilities and more than few developers are waiting impatiently for it. However, is not released yet, and no one can say for sure when it will be released. The good news is that Google made a Google Plus developer list you can subscribe to. If you do you’ll be the first to know everything about the release.
In a month we’ll see whether this was just an interesting novelty or Google+ will change the social landscape for good. And if this experiment succeeds, in about a couple of months there will be the first game-changing mobile apps riding on the wave of Google+ success.

Looking forward to the API… will be a long night but I’m going to get that bad boy hooked up to my system ASAP. :-)
Google+ looks smart, intuitive and seems to make good use of ‘social graph’. Would be great to leverage some Google goodness in your own applications.

Every move Google makes is part of a brilliant strategy. Think how Maps, Earth, Voice etc. could work together in Plus. “Fly” to a friend’s house to have a face to face talk with her… Who else could do this one simple thing ?
smashapp on July 16, 2011
@Leon I agree with you. The only question is what the users will think as too much. But plus seems to be on a good way so far.

Really hope Plus doesn’t turn into the mess of games and apps that Facebook is. That is part of what makes it better.
